AnnotationThe aim of this study was to examine how long-term widowhood affects psychological well-being and perceived social support of older people aged 75 years and over. Using a case-control study design, long-term widowed men and women were matched with married controls. Widows reported lower levels of psychological well-being than married women, and both widowers and widows reported considerably lower levels of perceived social support than their control groups. In addition, there were some indications that the perceived social support had a buffering effect on the psychological well-being of the respondents. The study concluded that widowhood may have some long-term effects on adaptation to older age.
