Annotation | Although the effectiveness of mammography in reducing breast cancer mortality in women aged 50 years and over has been demonstrated in clinical trials, mammography is underutilised among older women. Several studies have identified barriers to mammography use, including cost, access, transport and demographic characteristics, such as race, lower income and educational level. This study examined the use of mobile mammography as a mechanism for increasing screening rates among low income women aged 60 to 84 years in Los Angeles. Over half of those eligible for mammography accepted, and almost half of women who had never been screened or had not been screened within the last 5 years accepted. Factors identified as predictors of mammogram acceptance included Asian ethnicity, not being a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) member, being married, and being recommended by a physician. |
