AnnotationThere is a growing interest in achieving better knowledge of the factors associated with cognitive impairment, such as dementia, in order to improve the quality of care for older patients in hospitals. In this study, the Hodkinson Abbreviated Mental Test (HAMT) was administered to more than 3600 older inpatients in Italy to examine the association of cognitive impairment with demographic variables, education, and nutritional variables. Results revealed a high prevalence of cognitive impairment in older people who were hospitalised for general medical care. Education and nutritional variables were the major factors associated with cognitive impairment. The study concluded that an improvement in nutritional status is needed in approaching cognitive impairment in older patients.
