AnnotationDespite the preference for small scale domestic environments, a growing very old population and economic pressure make it inevitable that more larger residential care homes will be built. Judith Torrington is an architect and author of "Care homes for older people". She discusses some of the dilemmas facing designers, and suggests that a Medieval manor house such as Cotehele in Cornwall, a symbol of wealth and power, could provide a model for large-scale buildings that have a domestic "feel" and a rich mix of private and public spaces. This issue of Working with Older People focuses on care home design; examples of recently built and highly praised care homes are given to explain what the designers set out to achieve. (RH).
