AnnotationIn the 21st century, a physically active lifestyle will be a main contributor to maintaining a high quality of life in old age, and help us to see our later years as a time of well-being. Increased life expectancy in Japan has been achieved by, among other things, physical activity and exercise promotion in preference to other types of preventive medicine. This culminated in the opening of the Tokyo Metropolitan Health Promotion Centre in 1993 and the establishment of other centres throughout Japan. (RH).
