AnnotationCuba is already well advanced in the demographic transition to an ageing society, more than 12% of the population (more than 1.3 million) being aged 60+. The "círculos de abuelos" (grandparents' groups) began as a neighbourhood social support network in the mid-1980s. The author describes how the exercise programme has become the core activity in bringing such groups together, in such a way that these neighbourhood networks provide the best means of promoting older people's health.
