Annotation | There is little information available regarding the trend towards hospice care in nursing homes in the US. As a first step to a more comprehensive examination, the authors provide a descriptive analysis of nursing homes which contain special care hospice units, and a preliminary examination of the determinants of nursing homes with special care hospice units. They found a significant relationship between small nursing homes, run for profit, part of a chain organisation, and located in areas with more hospital beds, and nursing homes which have a hospice special care unit.
