AnnotationIn China, there is a strong belief that children have a general responsibility to care for their older parents , and female family members constitute the majority of the caregivers. However, demographic and modernising changes have affected the capacity and willingness of families to provide care for their older members. The Chinese government has promulgated a series of laws and regulations prescribing family obligations, one of which is the Law on the Welfare for the Elderly. This law delineates the responsibility of husbands and wives to support their parents and parents-in-law. However, formal services supporting families are underdeveloped, and the author argues that the government must formulate an effective policy to facilitate, support and maximise family care.
