Annotation | This paper considers the importance, and difficulties, of discovering what people with dementia can tell us about themselves and their experiences. It looks at developments in understanding non-verbal forms of communication, for instance, it is recognised that the behaviour of a person with dementia, such as wandering, is communication. In addition, the paper argues that the purely medical view of Alzheimer's disease must be resisted, and that the person with dementia must be kept in focus. This paper was given at the 13th Alzheimer's International Conference - entitled The Blind Hunter - in Helsinki, Finland, September 1997. The author is the director of the Alzheimer's Disease Society. |
