Annotation | The term `graduate' is sometimes used to describe patients with long-term functional psychiatric illness who have graduated to older age (65 years and over). Some of these patients entered mental hospitals before modern methods of treatment were available, in particular patients suffering from schizophrenia. This article describes the epidemiology, clinical characteristics and prognosis of schizophrenia in relation to older long-stay patients. It considers the complex needs of this group of patients, and suggests that a shift in emphasis can be seen from long-stay geriatric inpatients with chronic illness to those who adapt successfully to life in the community. |
