AnnotationDelirium is a syndrome of impaired attention and cognition, with an acute onset. It is most commonly found in older medical and surgical patient populations, yet it remains under-recognised and misdiagnosed. Early and accurate diagnosis is important, as patients who develop delirium are at increased risk of prolonged hospitalisation, nursing home placement, and death. This article describes the risk factors for delirium, and some recently developed predictive models which help identifying patients at risk at time of admission to hospital. A number of diagnostic instruments are also described. The article concludes with suggestions for future investigations.
