Annotation | Incontinence is a common health problem and the incidence increases with age. This article examines the role of surgery in the treatment of incontinence. Surgical procedures used to treat stress incontinence include Marshall-Marchetti-Krantz operation; Burch colposuspension, pubovaginal slings, endoscopic needle suspension procedures, and laparoscopic colposuspension. Some alternatives to surgery are also outlined. The article concludes that surgery is appropriate in some older patients, but that it must be realised that there is usually a greater morbidity and mortality in this age group compared with younger patients. |
