AnnotationThis study investigated the role of attachment styles and personality in shaping the experiences of a group of 126 adult caregivers of persons with dementia. In particular, broad personality dimensions related to emotional style (neuroticism), to social behaviour (extroversion, agreeableness), or to caregiving (conscientiousness) were examined together with attachment styles (anxious-ambivalent and avoidant factors). Support was found for the contribution of the attachment style factors in explaining aspects of the caregiver experiences. Caregivers who chose to institutionalise dependents were higher on the avoidance factor than those choosing to care for them at home. Less anxious-ambivalent caregivers reported larger social support networks, and more satisfaction with the support received than those lower on this factor.
