Annotation | This study examined the relationship between normal ageing, intelligence and frontal lobe functioning. Intelligence tests and frontal lobe functioning tests were administered to 107 adults (25-46 years and 70-99 years). Intelligence measures were assessed with two crystallised tests (WAIS Vocabulary and Information sub-tests), one fluid intelligence test (Cattell's Matrices) and one mixed, crystallised and fluid test (WAIS Similarities sub-test). Frontal functioning was assessed using the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) and two tests of verbal fluency. Results revealed significant age differences in favour of the younger participants on the two intelligence tests with a fluid component and on all measures of frontal lobe functioning. The findings of the study suggests that the normal ageing process is associated with a reduction in the efficiency of frontal lobe functioning and that impaired functioning is partly manifested as a reduction in fluid intelligence performance. |
