Annotation | In this study, the contents of essays written by Finnish and Polish adolescents were analysed to find out to what extent the differences in social structure between Finland and Poland are reflected in the views adolescents have of their grandparents. Significant cross-cultural differences in the descriptions of grandparents were found: Polish adolescents described them in more abstract terms, mentioned their feelings, personality and skills more frequently, as well as the emotional and intellectual input from them. Finnish adolescents used less positive terms, and mentioned activities and appearance of grandparents more frequently. The differences between the two cultures were mediated by contact frequency. |
