Annotation | Respect for older people has long been recognised as a highly valued principle in Asian cultures, however, social and economic changes may have changed this. In this study, the meaning of the concept of respect was re-examined, within the context of a fast modernising Asian multicultural society - Singapore. The focus group methodology was used. Findings revealed that the meaning of respect both from the perspective of the older and middle-aged generations has shifted from obedience to courteous behaviour. The degree of respect accorded to older people in Singapore was perceived to haver decreased by the majority of the focus groups. |
