Annotation | Few attempts have been made to reassess the attitudes to ageing and older age of the ancient-medieval Greek-speaking world on the basis of literary remains since B E Richardson's 'Old age among the ancient Greeks', 1933. In this article, fables are analysed to isolate texts which relate to ageing and the attitudes they reveal. Although few fables touch upon the matter, most are complimentary. Older people are seen to increase in certain powers other than physical strength. They are characterised as being astute, intelligent, crafty, loyal, and capable of giving sound advice and good leadership. |
