AnnotationThis report is the outcome of a two year project funded by the TSB Foundations as part of the Carnegie Third Age Programme. The main study explored the experiences of volunteers aged 50 years and over in 25 organisations, looked at ways of enhancing the recruitment and retention of older volunteers, and at some of the sources of dissatisfaction and tension for both organisations and volunteers. A smaller study was carried to find out about the impact of employer-supported volunteering (ESV) on employees aged 50 years and over and on retirees, and to examine whether ESV is a good introduction to voluntary work for older people. Findings from the main study showed that the majority of older volunteers enjoyed their voluntary work, and the organisations valued their contribution, however, over a third of the volunteers wanted better opportunities to use their skills. Findings from the ESV study showed that retirees would be attracted to voluntary work which was supported by their former employer.
