AnnotationIt was hypothesised that patients with a diagnosis of dementia and with oestrogen exposure would have fewer symptoms of depression, aggressive behaviour and/or psychosis. 18 women (6 current oestrogen users, 6 past users, and 6 "never" users), mean age 75, were recruited to this pilot study. The 21-item Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HRSD), the Rating scale for Aggressive Behaviour in the Elderly (RAGE), and the Positive Scale of Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) were administered. Those with dementia who had never received oestrogen scored higher on aggression than those with dementia who currently or formerly received oestrogen. The relationship between oestrogen exposure and the extent of depressive or psychotic symptomatology merits re-examination with larger samples that also include men. (RH).
