AnnotationThe Aberrant Behavior Checklist - Community (ABC-C) was administered to four groups of older individuals, mean age 79.35 years; 35 with dual diagnosis of mental disorder and mental illness; 59 with mental illness only; 20 with mental disorder only; and 58 with neither mental disorder nor mental illness. Individuals with dual diagnosis were rated significantly higher, suggesting more psychopathology than those in the other three groups which did not differ from one another. Compared to those not receiving psychotropic medication, those on medication had consistently higher ratings. Younger individuals tended to be rated higher than older ones. Men were rated higher than women, but only on the Hyperactivity / Noncompliance scale. There were no significant interaction effects on any of the analyses. The Lethargy / Social Withdraw scale was the least discriminating of the five scales with this older population. Data are consistent with previous findings on the ABC-C and add to the normative base of the instrument. They suggest that the ABC-C can be used as a measure of problem behaviours with older people.
