Annotation | Cases of old or infirm people being discovered in their homes weeks or months after death cause great public concern. Help the Aged commissioned the Centre for Policy on Ageing (CPA) to carry out research to determine how often such cases occur, and to consider the policy implications for providers of health and social care. The cases of 647 people dying alone were identified from coroners' records covering Barking and Dagenham, Greenwich, Havering, Lambeth, Lewisham, Newham, Redbridge, Southwark and Waltham Forest. Comparison with results from the 1977 York study lends no real support to the view that found deaths have become more common since the 1960s and 1970s. This report also examines recent trends in location of death (i.e. hospital, home or care home) and preferences for place of death through a review of the literature. |
