AnnotationThis paper reports on a study which forms part of an extensive longitudinal and cohort research programme initiated in 1972 in Jyväskylä, Finland. The target group of the programme consisted of 66-year old people (born 1905-1906), who were interviewed every four years until 1992. A new group of 66-year olds were incorporated into the project every four years, which made it possible to make longitudinal, cross-sectional and cohort comparisons. In this paper, the results of a cohort comparison study among 66-year old people in 1972 and 1992 are reported, focusing on differences in living conditions, health, functional ability, use of health care services and lifestyle factors. Findings showed that the later cohort reported better health status, better financial situation, and a more active lifestyle.
