AnnotationThe aim of this thesis was to describe the experiences of strain in family caregivers to older people with dementia. The study involved 52 caregivers of older persons with dementia and 66 non-caregivers of non-demented older people who participated in the Kungsholmen Project, a longitudinal population-based study of people aged 75 years and over in Stockholm, Sweden. Using the Burden Questionnaire and the Burnout Measure, the study investigated caregivers' experiences of burnout, their coping strategies, and whether there were any differences in strain between the two caregiver groups. Findings showed that caregivers of relatives with dementia experienced the most strain, and that wife and daughter caregivers were most likely to report burnout. Those who experienced burnout used emotion-focused coping strategies (grieving, worrying, self-accusation) whereas those who did not experience burnout used more problem-focused coping strategies.
