Annotation | There has been an increasing interest in the health and health promotion needs of older people. This book highlights the diversity of health issues relevant to older age, and argues that older people are often mistakenly seen as a homogeneous group which in turn conceals the inequalities in this population. It discusses the influence of the physical, social and infrastructural environment on older people's health, and looks at their implications for social policy. The lack of detailed research evidence about the health-related behaviour of older people (lifestyle, smoking, drinking, diet, exercise) is highlighted, and it is recommended that the Health Education Authority (HEA) adopts a programme of research involving a three-stage strategy: secondary analysis of existing national data sources; qualitative research using focus groups with older people; and a national survey of older people's health needs and health promotion issues. |
