AnnotationThis report has been published with support from the Carnegie Third Age Trust and the Department for Education and Employment (DfEE). It is based on a wide-ranging mapping exercise on national provision and initiatives to help people in the third age - interpreted here as age 45+ - affected by redundancy and unemployment to remain economically and socially active, and to receive support and encouragement in learning. Provision of career guidance in a range of settings is outlined, including: enlightened employers who prepare their staff for career change; trade unions; the voluntary sector; self-help initiatives; formally organised guidance by careers and education services; training providers, and adult and community education; public services such as libraries, media and broadcasting; national policy initiatives such as the Carnegie Third Age Programme; and European initiatives.
