AnnotationResearch has shown poor concordance between what individuals would choose for themselves in critical medical situations and what proxies (usually family members) would choose for them. The aim of this study was to examine whether prior discussion of personal values by older women with their family members helped the latter to make health care decisions in congruence with the wishes of the older women. The women in the study were randomly assigned to experimental or control groups. The experimental treatment consisted of discussion of the treatment, followed by medical decision making using the Preferences for Life-sustaining Treatment Questionnaire, which presents 10 hypothetical medical situations. It was concluded that prior discussion of values did improve concordance, but only slightly.
