AnnotationThe publication by the United Kingdom Central Council on Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting (UKCC) of the document, 'Guidelines for professional practice' (1996) is a timely reminder to nurses of their ethical and legal responsibilities. The guidelines reiterate that as individuals, all nurses are both personally and professionally accountable for their practice, and cannot hide behind another professional or individual, claiming that they have been told to take a particular action. The author explores some of the issues nurses face in dealing with everyday dilemmas in practice.
