Annotation | Much has been written about the tension between autonomy (the right of self-government or personal freedom) and paternalism (limiting freedom and responsibility by well-meant regulation). A sense of control over our lives is important. Older people who make choices about events in their lives are less stressed and enjoy better health. Physicians understand this, but can be reluctant to respect autonomy. Clinicians should not impose their own values, but instead should try to understand what is important to their patients, and balance any risks accordingly. |
