AnnotationThis article summarises some recent advances in cardiovascular medicine: the benefits of prompt thrombolysis in AMI (acute myocardial infarction); the beneficial effects of the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor therapy; and cholesterol lowering with the statin drugs in primary and secondary prevention of coronary artery disease. However, if older patients miss out on effective preventive and treatment programmes, the cost may be for more expensive alternatives such as nursing home care.
