AnnotationThe rate at which an organism ages depends on the balance between the toxic free radicals like superoxide and hydrogen peroxide, and the body's antioxidant defences, including superoxide dismutase and catalase. This supports the theory that long-lived mammals have slower metabolic rates and accumulate free radicals more slowly than short-lived species. Other research with animals indicates that calorie restriction lengthens life, as it slows down many age-related diseases. Calorie restricted animals have reduced oxidative stress, by lowering their glucose concentrations and slowing metabolism. Such research may lead to improved understanding of ageing in humans.
