Annotation | The aim of this study was to assess the scope and nature of elder abuse and neglect in one traditional group currently undergoing social change: the Arabs in Israel. 128 social and health service professionals in northern Israel were asked to report all cases of elder abuse and neglect they had encountered in the 18 months prior to the study. Findings revealed that older Arab people in Israel had a 2.5% rate of abuse and neglect, which is slightly lower than expected. Rates were higher in urban areas and lowest in isolated villages. The profile of the abused older Arab did not significantly differ from that of the abused western older person. Sons and daughters-in-law ranked the highest among alleged abusers. The results lend some support to modernisation theories of ageing and elder abuse, which argue that modernisation has adversely affected the roles and status of older people. Recommendations are made in the areas of training and service enhancement. |
