Annotation | This article provides an overview of the scientific evidence of recent research that may reduce disability and improve the quality of life for older people. Topics covered: the benefits of physical exercise for older people; the benefits of comprehensive geriatric assessment and appropriate interventions for reducing disability and institutionalisation of older people; prevention and treatment of specific diseases and conditions, such as hypertension, stroke, and congestive heart failure; progress in the diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis; pharmacological interventions to delay the onset of Alzheimer's disease; and the anti-ageing properties of Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and Growth Hormone. The author concludes that more research is needed to further our understanding of the pathophysiology of disability, and to develop effective interventions. |
