Annotation | There have been few studies of the attitudes of older Asians toward life-sustaining therapies. This study investigated the knowledge of and attitudes toward cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and life support in a cohort of older residential home residents and geriatric ward in-patients in Hong Kong. It found that knowledge of life-sustaining procedures was poor, with approximately 80% of home residents and 60% of in-patients had no knowledge of such therapies. The majority wished to be resuscitated, and the success rate of CPR was overestimated, although up to 20% changed their minds and declined CPR when they knew the true outcome of the procedure. |
