Independence and aging | Author(s) | I Cordingley, C Webb |
Journal title | Reviews in Clinical Gerontology, vol 7, no 2, 1997 |
Pages | pp 137-146 |
Keywords | Independence ; Ageing process ; Older women ; Attitudes to the old of general public. |
Annotation | This review considers the constructs of independence and dependence, in particular as applied to women growing older. It aims to demonstrate the problematic nature of these terms, and to highlight the fact that people's use of language affects our thinking about growing older. The author suggests that there is a need to move away from looking at independence and dependence as opposite ends of a spectrum, and instead to see the terms as relational. |
