Annotation | Drug-related problems are known to be prevalent among older people in the community and in hospitals, and are responsible for hospital admission. This study assessed the incidence of such problems in older people admitted to Tayside hospitals before and after implementation of preventive strategies. It found that 5.3% of older patient admissions were drug-related, the main drug group being non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs. Two-thirds of admissions due to adverse events caused by this type of drug were considered to be preventable. Although intervention strategies were not demonstrably effective, a reduction in the prescription of such drugs in Tayside compared with the rest of Scotland was observed. |
