AnnotationThis article looks at the use of direct measures of expectations, uncertainty and preferences in research studies that focus on the subjective probabilities of future events, for instance, the probabilities of nursing home entry for older people. Previously, such measures have been used mainly in the field of economics, however, some studies related to older people and ageing have also employed this type of measurement. The author suggests that such measures are useful in research on older populations, since the transitions that are characteristic of lifestyle changes associated with ageing (retirement, changing health and disability status, changing dependency roles of children and parents) can be more accurately modelled with the help of these subjective variables.
