AnnotationThe Women's Health and Aging Study (WHAS) is a prospective cohort study of community-resident women aged 65 years and over in the United States (USA) with moderate to severe physical disability. The overall aim of the study is to understand the causes and course of physical disability, in particular in relation to the presence and severity of disease. This article describes the content and administration of the physical assessment and examination components of the WHAS, and reviews equipment and safety issues and quality control procedures pertinent to home administration. It concludes that research-oriented physical evaluation can be successfully and safely performed in a home setting.
