Annotation | Research shows that older people are disproportionately dissatisfied with their sleep, and are also the main users of sedative-hypnotic medication. This article looks at the nature of sleep and sleep disturbance in older people. It describes the changes in sleep that occur with ageing, the role of physical and mental health in sleep disturbances, and some primary sleeping disorders. Evaluation of sleep problems is also addressed, including review of sleep history, sleep hygiene and education regarding age-related sleep change. The article concludes that sedative-hypnotics should be used with extreme caution and only for temporary or situational sleep disturbances. |
