AnnotationNurse aides, who provide most of the daily care to nursing home residents, are often consulted by nurses regarding residents' functional health status for use in care planning and quality assurance, however, the accuracy of nurse aides' assessments have not been studied. In this study, functional health assessments by 24 nurse aides, each assessing 4 different residents, were compared to those of 1 nurse practitioner. Results showed that nurse aide assessments and nurse practitioner assessments were highly correlated. In the few cases where bias was present, it usually resulted from nurse aides electing more optimistic choices when using an assessment instrument that offered fewer response levels for rating residents.
