AnnotationThere are currently no coherent national standards to guide the inspection of residential and nursing homes. The legislation is ambiguous, and because it is vague, inspection units have introduced their own guidelines. This article presents views on the current inspectorate system and the need for national standards, with quotes from an advocacy group (Counsel and Care), a nurse, an inspector, and a nursing home provider (representing Care First). The drawbacks and benefits of a national inspectorate are outlined. The Government is reported to favour merging social services and health authority inspections and reforming the inspection process. A unified inspection team is likely to work to national or regional standards, with training to include both qualitative and quantitative measures. (RH).
