AnnotationThis study reports on a prospective case control study to identify clinical characteristics of elderly inpatients that predict their chance of falling. This phase and phase 2, an investigation of STRATIFY (St Thomas's risk assessment tool in falling elderly inpatients) were carried out at St Thomas's Hospital elderly care unit. STRATIFY measured five factors significantly associated with falls, and which showed high sensitivity and specificity in predicting falls. Its local validity was further tested at Kent and Canterbury Hospital, and was found to predict with clinically useful sensitivity and specificity a high percentage of falls among elderly hospital inpatients. The authors conclude that further study is needed to determine whether falls of inpatients identified as high risk can be prevented by a targeted intervention.
