Annotation | Medicare is the largest public healthcare programme in the United States (US), providing the major source of insurance for acute care for older and disabled people. However, increased demands for more services have resulted in a rapid growth in cost, which is now of major concern to policy-makers. This book aims to describe and analyse the growth and development of the Medicare programme and to assess future options for change. The first part looks at Medicare's history, focusing on its emphasis on access in the early years, and later on cost-containment issues. In the second part, possible changes to the system are explored, including cost-containment measures, benefit expansions, options for reducing spending, and issues related to expansion, such as the inclusion of long-term care coverage. |
