AnnotationThis book explores how informal caregivers manage to combine caring for their older frail parents and working outside the home. The research is based on fifty in-depth interviews with working and middle class caregivers, mainly women. It looks at the range of caregiving circumstances, and the ways in which adult children become carers, including the role of gender, in-law and sibling relationships. The effect of caregiving on employment is considered, particularly in relation to class differences. It also addresses the stress of caregiving, and the implications for the caregivers' own families. Policies and measures which caregivers would find useful are discussed, including paid leave to care for older parents; subsidised respite care services; and additional financing to purchase respite care and other assistance.
