AnnotationThis book examines the role of learning in maintaining the health, quality of life and longevity in older people, and in providing opportunities for them to take on new roles in society. Drawing on data from the Elderlearning survey (United States), a comprehensive survey on the topic of adult learning in men and women aged 55 years and over, the book provides key data on the sources, topics and extent of the current learning activities of older adults. Adult learning is examined from the perspective of providers of learning services, as well as from the viewpoint of individual learners, using information from interviews. The policy implications of continuing learning in older age are addressed, and the book concludes with an agenda for improving learning opportunities for older adults, including: the possibility of continued work; a redefinition of retirement; returning to learning workshops; distance and self-directed learning; and intergenerational activities.
