Annotation | This report is a follow-up to the author's 1995 report, 'We will need to take you in', and has as its starting point that the successful rehousing of an older person is not the end of the matter. It examines the personal and social stresses of homelessness in later life and subsequent rehousing. Two sources of statistical information are analysed: the pattern of lettings to older people in Glasgow from 1983; and a sample database of hostel dwellers in England. These demonstrate the high incidence of homeless older people leaving tenancies, and who form a more or less permanent hostel population. A review of the available research on supported housing and rehousing of the long term hostel population, focusing on social and emotional need, is presented. The report concludes that older homeless people require a range of housing advice, individual support, befriending projects and other services if they are to cope with maintaining a tenancy. |
