AnnotationWhat older people want is the opportunity to remain independent, as full and active citizens in control of their own lives. This report explores in some detail the erosion of services that enable independence over recent years, and the resulting pressures on services at the 'emergency' end of the spectrum. Its suggestions and recommendations aim to break the link between ageing and loss of autonomy, and between ageing and exclusion. Remaining healthy, active and independent depends on a complex of factors which are discussed: accessible primary care; warm, safe, convenient housing; recuperation and rehabilitation facilities; personal care at home; domestic help; involvement and inclusion; mobility; information advice and advocacy; and staying in control of decisions that affect one's life.
