AnnotationThe workshop considered aspects of older people's care needs in the UK, with particular emphasis on the assessment of need and the effectiveness of care, in the light of National Health Service and community care reforms. It reviewed contributions made to the care of older people by the professional and voluntary agencies, and considered their more effective integration. Keynote papers were presented on: the state of health of older people; assessing the health of older people using data provided by general practitioners; the effectiveness of care; and the views of service users. The workshop made recommendations for setting up an Inter-Departmental Government Working Group on Ageing, involving the voluntary sector at all stages of service planning, and the establishment of multi-disciplinary teams.
