Annotation | This is a summary of authors' full report, 'Choice, information and dignity: involving users and carers in care management in mental health', published by the Policy Press, in association with Community Care magazine. In their survey of 109 users with severe and/or long-term mental health problems, most were very positive about their relationships with their care manager (psychiatric nurse or social worker). However, few had been asked their views about admission to hospital or knew about complaints procedures. The views of carers and professionals are also discussed: carers wanted to be involved in their relative's care; and most mental health professionals were committed to the idea of care and user involvement, and were positive about their effects. The research identified a lack knowledge on the part of GPs (general practitioners): only half knew what a care programme was, and very few had been involved in developing or reviewing one. |
