AnnotationThis paper is one of a series of briefings prepared for the "Older People in Europe" Conference organised by the European Resource Unit in January 1995, focusing on themes and issues which will have been addressed by the European Commission's proposed Second Programme on Old People in 1996. The author emphasises the interconnectedness of employment and income issues in the third age, and concludes that a piecemeal approach to the transition from employment to retirement alone is insufficient. A comprehensive reassessment is required, which focuses on issues which include: work opportunities (formal and informal); life-long training; and combatting age discrimination.
