Annotation | This publication contains a transcription of the Poverty Symposium on 28 March 1996, held at the Permanent Mission of Turkey to the United Nations in New York City. The symposium was co-sponsored by the African-American Institute (AAI), the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), and the United Nations Centre for Human Settlements (HABITAT). The aims of the symposium were: to raise public awareness of the participation of older people despite poverty; how societies can capitalise on the contributions of their older populations, including volunteering; the impact of urban and rural poverty on the future productivity of older persons; the importance of adequate demographics on older people in order to ensure their inclusion in social policy decisions; and the increase in the number of older people in human settlements of the world.
